CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Garry
AGE: In his early 20s, give or take
CANON: Ib
NAME: Garry
AGE: In his early 20s, give or take
CANON: Ib
CANON HISTORY: wiki link, played from the ending "Promise of Reunion" where both Ib and Garry escape alive.
CANON PERSONALITY: While he’s partially shrouded in mystery due to us not knowing what his life was like prior to his visit to the museum, Garry has shown numerous times to be a very kind person. Femininity is a defining trait of his-- he uses feminine pronouns (‘atashi’) in Japanese and speaks in a manner most closely equivalent to lavender linguistics. The creator described him to be “someone who would like to cross the barriers of gender”, suggesting that he is a person who values gender non-conformity. If Ib asks him why he speaks the way he does, he explains that he has taken to it and that sounding gentle was better than sounding crude or harsh; which shows his desire to come off as an approachable person. He also seems to be rather fashion-conscious, as he notes from an eye’s glance that Ib’s clothes were made of fine cloth and he says how he took his time deciding whether to wear something fancier before his visit to the gallery-- something that might also be linked to his feminine personality.
He’s described to be a bit strange or eccentric, but very easy to like. When he meets Ib he acts polite towards her from the very beginning, and not wanting to leave a little girl all by her lonesome, immediately offers to accompany her. Throughout the game, he often expresses worry for Ib and acts like her guardian or older sibling figure. He carries her to safety after she faints from stress, covers her in his coat as she sleeps, and gives her a piece of candy to cheer her up afterwards. He’s also very considerate of her feelings, apologizing to her for being too focused on escaping from the museum and not keeping a close enough eye on her well-being, and insisting she should tell him from now on if she ever needed to take a break. Even after escaping a near-death situation, when he finds out Mary is a painting his immediate reaction is to rush to make sure she didn’t hurt Ib.
To contrast the protagonist’s general unresponsiveness, Garry is very expressive and vocal about the strange things that happen around them. He’s easily frightened and can sometimes let his temper get the best of him-- most notably shown when he takes his frustrations out on a mannequin head that startled him by kicking it, if Ib doesn’t intervene. There is another instance where he has the choice to kick a creepy doll that’s been insistently following him around into a wall, which tells us that Garry isn’t above pettiness and his patience isn’t endless-- at least towards people or things he doesn’t care about.
Though, Garry’s protectiveness of Ib far overpowers his apparent cowardice. It reaches self-sacrificial levels, as proven when he lets Mary take his rose in exchange for Ib’s, despite knowing full well that he’d be putting himself in danger. Even as he feels his life slowly deteriorating, he doesn’t want to worry Ib and tells her she should go on without him, and that he was fine.

AU NAME: Garry, ne "Tatsuo Mizuki".
AU AGE: 21
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Instead of lavender hair with darker strands sprouting from the top of his head, he has black hair. You can't really see his eye color in his portrait (it's drawn as black), but I gave him naturally dark brown eyes, though he often wears blue fashion contacts. Otherwise, he’s pretty much the same.

AU HISTORY:
AU PERSONALITY:
- Born and raised in Japan, and in a rather traditional family. Garry's parents didn't take kindly to his gender nonconformity, which he expressed from a young age but didn't become vocal about until his teens out of fear of abuse. His siblings (both younger and older) were the only consistent support he received during his life there.
- It's around the time of his high school entrance exams that he became fully estranged from his parents, and he went to live with his grandpa-- who was a locally renown painter. He became his guardian, and supported him both financially and emotionally when he was at his lowest point. Since Garry was in no state to study for his exams at the time, he failed them and ended up taking a year off to recover.
- Being an artist himself, his grandfather let Garry cultivate his own artistic senses and growing interest in fashion, without discriminating against his general lifestyle. That kind of support was what Garry needed in order to regain his self confidence.
- During that time, his grandpa got an offer to exhibit his artwork in Recolle, and took a then 16 year old Garry along with him in hopes that a change of pace would be good for him. He really took to how peaceful the city was, and his grandfather suggested he could choose to attend high school and university here instead of back in Japan. Garry didn't make the decision right away, but ultimately accepted.
- It's possible he applied for a home stay during his high schoos in Recolle, in order to get to know the city's layout better school. He graduates at age 19 and takes on a Fashion Design major in Recolle University, and subsequently moves to Birch Hills.
- Around that time, he meets Charlotte (
magcat ) during a visit to the local museum, and the two connect over a shared interest in art. As they become better friends, she ends up telling him about her own worries regarding femininity, and he helps her become more comfortable with it by letting her model for his designs, sewing dresses her and giving her beauty tips-- like telling her she could grow her hair out.
AU PERSONALITY:
- He's not too different from canon-- he's still a very gentle, kind and slightly eccentric guy. Garry has a very carefree air about him, so sometimes the things he says can sound a bit out there, and maybe some people will consider his speech and the way he carries himself to be strange. Though his unique speech might be more noticeable to Japanese speakers than English ones.
- Since Garry's Japanese, being polite is just naturally ingrained into his behavior. He's much less likely to express his anger or frustrations because he was taught from a young age that it was unsightly to do so. As a result he tends to bottle up his feelings and values other people's well-being before his own.
- Being raised in an unhealthy house environment for the first 14 years of his life has given Garry anxiety, and while he's gotten better since he will still act timid and sort of like a doormat--especially towards those more assertive/aggressive than him.
- Since he hasn't had to experience going through the world of Guertena, he's likely to be much more scaredy and jumpy in the face of new dangers. It would take extreme circumstances for him to be as self sacrificial as he can be in the game.
- Garry's an art student, and you know how art students are-- stressed and depressed (but well dressed!). He has a penchant for working himself too hard, and since he's juggling between school and maintaining an online store he opened to help pay for living expenses, his tiredness will sometimes show more prominently than usual.
- He has a very strong appreciation for the arts, which is only amplified during his years spent with his grandfather. It'll be one of the things he is visibly passionate about, and he will enjoy fraternizing with his fellow art students or artsy friends.
- He's the kind of guy who would get along with middle aged women and attend their tea parties.
